Oh February!

Oh, how I have missed thee!

February has come and gone, and I have been away making significant moves. Even though a new month has just begun, I couldn’t forget to share my February. February is a fun month for me anyway because It’s Black History Month and I love learning about my history. Speaking of history, I just made a major milestone. I completed the last course of my doctorate program, and now I’m working on my dissertation which means I’m closer to being a doctor. I’m so excited to begin my research study which encompasses me working with African American women. The cool thing about this process is that my sister is also working on her doctorate as well.

I also got a chance to see the Black Panther movie with my family, and it was fantastic. I am a fan of the Marvel Universe franchise, so I’ve seen all of the films and shows prior to Black Panther. If you don’t follow Marvel Universe, each movie and show gives a different energy and experience. So, I try not to compare each project. This movie is in my top three favorite Marvel movies (the other two are The Avengers and Captain: America The First Avenger). This movie was so empowering and provided so many messages. I love how the women exuded feminity, strength, and intelligence.

I’ve indulged in a PBS docu-series via Amazon Prime called Finding Your Roots which delves into the lives of celebrities of various racial and ethnic backgrounds. This show is so fascinating. I totally recommend this show.

PhD Journey: Online Learning and Social Change

Hello, lovelies!

For those of you who don’t know, I am working on my doctorate degree.  I am going the non-traditional route and completing my degree online.  Initially, I had my reservations about getting my degree online because of the assumption that online learning is easier and is not credible.  I did a lot of research and talked to professors in my master’s program who completed their PhDs online.

I was told that online learning can be very challenging and demanding compared to going to a traditional brick and mortar campus.  I must say that my coursework is demanding and requires a lot time managment.  However, getting a PhD is not suppose to be easy but it is doable.  I took my time to find a program that interest me and would help with my career goals.  I wanted to do Psychology but my heart was not settled on being a psychologist.  So, I did more research and chose to purse my doctorate in Human Services with a specialization in Family Studies and Intervention Strategies.  FYI, if you decide to pursue a doctorate do something that you are passionate about or truly enjoy doing, because the process is expensive, time consuming, and ultimately an investment in your career.

I have truly enjoyed this journey so far.  The one thing that sold me in to selecting my program and university is that the school has a mission to impact social change throughout the world in various capacities.  I’m all about equality and equity for every person.   I love seeing people be empowered and my goal is help others become empowered.

So, I’ll be sharing this process along the way.  Here’s a picture of me, some the ladies in my program, and one of our professors (blue shirt) back in May for one of our Residencies.

I went to the Georgia Aquarium during one of my breaks at my residency in at Atlanta.

Hello fellow bloggers!

Back in February, I got a random email from WordPress about checking out a resource called Blogging University.  I am glad that I read it and didn’t delete it.  Blogging U. has several classes that bloggers can take to enhance your blogging experience.  I took the Photo 101 course and the Commenting Bootcamp.  What happens is once you sign up for a course you get email reminders of what to do.  It’s April already and I’m just getting started with my March challenges.  Here is the link to Blogging U. if you’re interested.

So today, I will be posting Day One of Photo 101 titled “Home”.  I chose to these two pictures.  The first picture is a corner in my living room.  For those of you who follow me, you know I love color.  Over the last holiday, I  painted my living room blue and yellow.  At home, I let the free-spirited part of me out.  The second picture is part of the fence to my backyard.

As you can see, I literally live in color.  I would love to know what home means to you!

I look forward to sharing more photos with you all!

Talk you soon, Brandi

Travel Diaries: World Natural Hair Show 2015

Hello lovelies!  Jessica and I went to Atlanta this past weekend to attend the annual World Natural Hair Show.  It was a really exciting experience to see so many women rocking their natural hair in afros, twist outs, wash-n-gos, braids, and other styles. There were other vloggers and bloggers there.

I had the opportunity to meet one of my favorite YouTube vloggers Toni Daley (tonidaley.com.)  I was super excited to meet her and support your business.

Toni and I

Here’s what I got from Toni:

I also got some mugs from an artist called Twisted Cheri.  She makes posters and drawings of African-American women.  www.twistedcheri.com

I also got a chance to support other business and I got a chance to stock up on some hair and skin care products.

A Blogger’s Life: Eric Clapton, Honey, Lipstick, and More

image

Hey blogger friends!

The beauty about being a blogger is that you share parts of yourself—the good, bad, and in-between.   Here’s a little of the in-between.  This past weekend I did a little retail therapy on myself.   School has been intense, but that’s to be expected with a doctoral program.  I have been job hunting, substitute teaching, and getting my house ready to be put on the market.  My anxiety has been pretty high which has induced stress related asthma attack.

So, self-care has been essential for my sanity and health.  I made a late night trip to the mall of my town, Walmart.  I got an Essence magazine (may favorite magazine brand) with on of my favorite fashion icons–Miss Tracee Ellis Ross. This magazine gives me a little bit of everything…beauty, fashion, entertainment, empowerment, and education.  I found an Eric Clapton CD for $5.  I needed a little bit of rock laced with funk and blues.  I got some honey for my skin, hair, and tea.  I found some Elf lipstick for $1. And I got some LeKair cholesterol for my hair for $1.83. My hair loves this brand of cholesterol.

I took some time for myself.  I pampered my body, stimulated my mind, and fed my soul.  Sometimes simple things can bring so much joy…

xoxo Brandi
